Reading Kevin Zraly's Windows On The World Complete Wine Course, I found some very useful information if you're a fan of Piedmontese wines (he actually gleaned the info from Giuseppe Colla from Prunotto, one of the top producers from the region).

In an exceptional vintage set a Barbaresco aside for a minimum of four years before drinking.

In an exceptional vintage set a Barolo aside for a minimum of six years before drinking.

In an extraordinary vintage set a Barbaresco aside for a minimum of six years before drinking.

In an extraordinary vintage set a Barolo aside for a minimum of eight years before drinking.
