According to John Hailman, author of Thomas Jefferson On Wine, Jefferson learned a neat trick from his French friend Henri Bergasse and adapted it to his Monticello cellar: Keep your wines safe and cool by simply covering them with wet sand. May be a bit messy but it certainly worked for Mr. Jefferson!
